Modern Foreign Languages
Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish)
At Queen's Park Primary School, we believe learning a modern foreign language broadens children's understanding of the world, develops confidence in communication and promotes respect for different cultures. Through learning Spanish, pupils develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while building curiosity, resilience and an appreciation of languages beyond their own.
Spanish is taught throughout Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels scheme of work, which provides clear progression in vocabulary, grammar and language skills. Lessons are practical, interactive and vocabulary-rich, with a strong focus on speaking and listening before introducing reading and writing. Pupils learn through songs, games, role play, retrieval activities and cultural learning. Spanish is also encouraged through everyday classroom routines such as greetings, the register and simple classroom instructions.
Our curriculum celebrates the diversity of our school community and supports our school drivers of Oracy, Sense of Belonging, Pathways to Success, Power of Literature and Irresistibility. Teaching is adapted so that all pupils can participate and succeed, while bilingual pupils are encouraged to share their expertise and enrich the learning of others.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are able to communicate using simple spoken and written Spanish, recall and apply previously taught vocabulary, develop an understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and cultures, and recognise the value of learning another language. They leave Queen's Park with the confidence, knowledge and enthusiasm to continue their language learning at secondary school.
