Amazing Animals!

Year 1 have had a great start to the new year. We have started our new topic Amazing Animals. This links nicely with the play ‘I Want My Hat Back’ which we have started rehearsing. Last week we  created props and the backdrop for the play. The children have been fully immersed and are already familiar with the story.

In English, we have been learning about facts and opinions using the woodland animals in our play and are writing facts to display our findings. The children have loved looking through non-fiction texts from the library and watching BBC videos to find out new information. Did you know the only continent you won’t find owls is in Antarctica?!

In Maths, we are learning how to partition numbers to 20. We have been learning this practically using Numicon, Dienes, Tens frames, Place Value Charts and are displaying our findings using the part-part-whole model. The children love learning practically and it enables opportunities for great reasoning.

In Science, we are learning how to identify and group animals. Firstly, we grouped ourselves into different categories and then we found out about different groups of animals; mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. We are comparing similarities and differences between humans and animals.

The children are taking home new phonics books, please continue to practise with your child at home each night and remember to bring them back the following morning. We will send daily texts to remind children of the sound they are practising. If your child has lines to learn for our play we will send these home, if you can go over these lines regularly with your child we would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your continued support.
